Mullins also captured Wednesday's Champion Hurdle with Annie Power, who remains unbeaten over hurdles after her victory at Prestbury Park.

Small Soldiers Betting Frenzy!

Just in time for the weekend, Small Soldiers (the movie) is now available to be streamed on Netflix. As you may know, the film is based on a 1998 toy line and video game of the same name from developer Gavin Game. The objective of the game is to lead your platoon of small plastic soldiers to victory in a series of tactical combat scenarios.

The original line of toys was released by Galoob Toys and consisted of four different figure types: Commando Elite (the good guys), Gorgonites (the bad guys), Infantry, and Medics. A special edition set was also released including a fifth figure type, the Tank Commander. These figures were about 3 inches high and each came with its own unique weapon or accessory. The figures could also be combined with other figure types to create larger robots or vehicles.

The new Netflix version has been given a fresh coat of paint (no pun intended) for a new generation of viewers. The basic plot remains the same, though: the Gorgonites are trying to escape extermination at the hands of the Commando Elite, while the latter are trying to stop them at all costs. There are new characters and updated plotlines, but it still retains that nostalgic feel for those who played with the toys back in the day.

The popularity of the toy line led to a feature-length film adaptation released by DreamWorks in 1998. The film was directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins) and starred Kirsten Dunst (Spiderman), Gregory Smith (Everwood), David Cross (Arrested Development), Dinah Manoff (Grease 2), and Tommy Lee Jones (Men In Black). While it was not as successful as predicted at the box office – brought in only $36 million against its $75 million budget – it has since gained a cult following over time.

In 2002, a sequel was planned but eventually scrapped due to poor sales of tie-in merchandise. However, in 2017 plans were announced for a reboot/sequel television series with Army of Darkness producer Sam Raimi attached as an executive producer. So far there is no release date set for this project.
